MALEFICA (1990)

Malefica (1990) was a site specific work that took place on the shores of Kootenay Lake in Nelson, BC. The show explored the politics of the witch hunts in England in the early 1600's as a metaphor for contemporary resource extraction and abuse facing rural BC communities. During the witch hunts of Europe, traditional female healers, the vulnerable and poor were often scapegoated, hunted for money and executed as the church teamed up with hired witch hunters to appropriate land and destroy political and theological dissent. The show featured a cast of five plus ten community members, the rain, the wind, fire on the water and original music. Directed by Kate Weiss.
