MATCHBOX MEMORIAL (2006)

Matchbox Memorial is a community collaborative, site-specific project that I initiated and facilitated through Oxygen Art Centre. The project was created and installed over Halloween, 2006. Matchbox Memorial troubles the popular concept of witches with subversive images and a little dark history lesson. Women and men made the matchboxes into exquisite, miniature works of art using archival images, text, family photos, matchboxes, matches, beeswax and various beads, feathers, sequins etc. The Matchboxes were then installed around the town on power poles. (Which we later discovered was illegal. Somehow that makes sense) Thank you to all the community members who participated in this work.
